my four step program to not be an Asshole:

1. acknowledge that you did something wrong. it’s ok to be wrong sometimes!!!! you just have to tell yourself and others that “yes i did something wrong”.
2. apologise for doing something wrong!!!! and not for “whoever found it offensive” either!!!! apologise for BEING offensive.
3. educate yourself on why you said the wrong thing and why it was wrong. lots of us don’t know a lot of things bc we live in sheltered environments or we benefit from privilege and don’t usually have to think about things like casual sexism or cissexism or trans*phobia or queer erasure or heterosexism etc.
4. finally, change!!!! there’s no use in going through the previous three steps if you’re not going to change your attitude/behaviour!!!!! all that hard work will have all gone to shit and you will still be an Asshole. and that’s no fun. nobody likes an Asshole.
